balletLorent is delighted that Philip Bernays, the former CEO of Newcastle Theatre Royal, has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of his services to drama.

During Philip’s tenure, Newcastle Theatre Royal gained widespread recognition as one of the leading regional theatre venues in the country. His leadership, particularly during the extraordinary challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, was instrumental in ensuring the survival of this Grade I listed venue. This prestigious honour acknowledges his many years of tireless work in championing arts, culture, and creativity within the city and across the North East.

Artistic Director Liv Lorent commented: "Philip Bernays has been chair of balletLORENT’s trustees since 2017. He has guided and supported the company with grace and wisdom, and I will be eternally grateful for his dedication to the company. It is heartening to see Philip receiving recognition for what he has brought to so many of us throughout his career."
