James trained at Central School of Ballet, London, before working in Germany for two years with Ballett Schindowski and Temper Temper Dance Company. James joined Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT) as a dancer in 2000 and was soon appointed Rehearsal Director. He was involved in the creation and performance of over 40 new works, by choreographers including Janet Smith, Liv Lorent, Rui Horta, Jo Stromgren, Kate Weare, James Wilton, Hofesh Shechter and Ina Christel Johannessen.
In 2011 James gained a distinction for an MA in Contemporary Dance at London Contemporary Dance School, specialising in the role of the Rehearsal Director.
In 2012 James was appointed Acting Artistic Director of SDT for an interim period.
James worked from 2013-2016 at London Contemporary Dance School as a Lecturer in Dance where he taught ballet and contemporary, and was also Head of Third Year.
James joined balletLORENT in 2016 as Education and Projects Manager.
