A is for Alma, on film

Thursday July 25th 2024Share page

Only Liv Lorent would dare to undertake a collaboration where small children dance around sculptures in an art gallery!

We're thrilled to present a captivating short film featuring the unique collaboration between Newcastle artist Katie Cuddon and the talented dancers of balletLORENT. Set against the backdrop of Katie's exhibition "A is for Alma" at the Hatton Gallery, in May this year. This film offers a moving portrayal of the union between art and the lived experiences of motherhood.

Katie’s clay sculptures, inspired by her journey as a mother, depict the intricate bond between parent and child. In response, balletLORENT brings these themes to life through a curated dance improvisation, where the dancers — accompanied by their children — navigate the space among these fragile artworks. This performance beautifully mirrors the real-time challenges and joys of parenting: the balance of focus, patience, resilience, and the art of nurturing in public and private spaces alike.

Directed by Liv Lorent, this film captures the delicate dance of guiding, restricting, responding, and loving, showcasing the dancers: Natalie MacGillivray with her three-year-old son Aiden and Benedicta Valentina Mamuini with her 11-month-old son Maverick. Accompanied by Albie Crompton's improvised music.
